Practicing what we preach

Being safe isn’t just what we ask of our members. It’s what we ask of our employees at Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative.
And it shows, everywhere you look around the TWEC headquarters.
As part of our continuing commitment to safety, TWEC recently completed a key part of the Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program (RESAP). RESAP is a voluntary National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) program that promotes a continuous process of achieving safety excellence.

Cooperatives are evaluated every 3 years on 5 key items: Leadership Commitment; Performance Measures; Applications; Observation; and Safety Improvement.
“Each cooperative’s inspection results are compared nationally to other cooperatives of the similar size and number of members,” said Carl Henning, the Safety Specialist for STAR Energy Services. “TWEC’s results from the inspection yielded a perfect score in two of the three major compared areas, well above the national average. The efforts of all TWEC employees were observed by the inspection team and were well noted and summarized as ‘TWEC, you are doing a very good job and this is demonstrated by a solid safety culture.’”

A team provided by MREA (Minnesota Rural Electric Association) observed and inspected the facilities, the vehicles, and the distribution system. During the inspection, safe work practices were observed and employees were interviewed. When all was said and done, TWEC received a ‘Strong Performance’ ranking, the highest possible, in 6 of 17 categories, and we received the 2nd highest ranking in the other 11 categories.

“We practice safe work practices year-round. Not just when we do a RESAP or other safety audits,” TWEC’s President and CEO Robin Doege said.
The highest rankings came in: Document Verification and Safety Improvement Plan; Warehouse and Covered Storage; Maintenance Facilities; Pole Yard and Outside Storage; Insulating Gloves, Sleeves and Cover-up; and Arc Related Clothing/Systems and Fall Protection.
